MAORI SCHOOLS NECESSARY

ABOLISHMENT NOT DESIRABLE ■

SUGGESTION BY ROTORUA CHAMBER (P. A) Rotorua, April 27. The necessity for separate MSori and European schools was explained by the Minister of Education Mr McCombs, in a letter received by the Rotorua Chamber cf Commerce tonight. The Minister was renlyinf? to a suggestion by the chamber that Maori schools be abolished. "The necessity for providing Maori schools is not due to any racial prejudice," said Mr McCombs. "It simply recognises the fact that., in localities where the Maori population is strongly predominant there is need for a special type of education to enable the young Maori child to absorb the essential features of the new culture while not neglecting values of his own." The chamber still held to its view that Maori schools should be abolished.
