RAGWORT ON MAORI LANDS

TRIBUTE TO COUNTY INSPECTOR

SCHEME TO CHECK SPREAD OF SEED

The effective steps taken by the county authorities for Ihe control of noxious weeds on Maori land were commented upon at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga branch of Federated Farmers (Auckland Province).

The president, Mr H. O. Lloyd, said that much badly-infested Maori land had been taken over and was being put to more effective use. The thanks of farmers were due to the County Noxious Weeds Inspector, Mr S. F. McKenzie who had devoted a considerable amount of time and trouble to bring about this improvement.

A most interesting scheme for ragwort control evolved by the former Noxious Weeds Inspector (Mr C. S. O'Neill) was quoted by Mr M. R. Munro. This consisted of the judicious planting of trees, which it was known acted as a barrier to the wind-borne spreading of the seed. A unique feature was that the scheme would ultimately be profit-bearing to the ratepayers from the sale of timber.
