LETTING OF HOUSES
NECESSITY FOR TENANCY REGISTERS
LANDLORDS REMINDED OF OBLIGATIONS
(P.A.)
Wellington, Jan. 11.
Landlords are reminded of tneir obligation to keep tenancy registers, in a circular to land agents and othei's concerned in the letting ox houses issued by the Department of Labour and Employment. The keeping of these registers was one of the provisions of the Fair Rents Amendment Act passed during last session of Parliament.
The circular emphasises that the keeping of tenancy registers is important. The register must contain a description of the premises, the name of each tenant, the dates of commencement and termination of the tenancy, the rent payable by each tenant and the date and details of any alteration, the basic rent and any fair rent fixed since September, 1942 ; with the dates on which it takes effect and ceases to take effect.
Registers must be kept by all persons letting dwelling houses or premises, whether furnished or unfurnished. for use as dwelling houses. These tenancy registers must be produced on demand to a magistrate or inspector of factories, or be available for inspection by any tenant or his solicitor. Where any dwelling house is purchased or acquired and has been let wholly or in part, the original landlord has to transfer the register to the new land-lord, who has to maintain the register irrespective of whether he intends to let the property.
