MEAT STRIKE IN N.S.W.
CONFERENCE SUGGESTED
Sydney, May 2
After a short hearing at which the parties in the meat strike were present, the New South Wales Industrial Commission agreed that a private conference would be held. For the first time the Meat Industry Employees’ Union has submitted to the commission its claims for a variation of the award to provide 20 minutes tea and “smoko” instead of the 15 minutes allowed previously at the Riverstone Works, Sydney. A conference of all unions affected is being held. Meanwhile, hundreds of city and suburban master butchers loaded vans and private cars with lamb and mutton at cold storage depots. Butter supplies are still plentiful. In Brisbane free labour is defying the pickets by marching to and from the station in military formation. Picket activity has declined, but the police are still guarding the Murarrie Works in force.. Opposition is limited to jeers and threatening gestures.
