PREMISES RAIDED BY POLICE

ALLEGED GAMING OFFENCES Twenty-Three Persons Charged Remands Granted Following police raids on premises in Tauranga on Saturday, alleged to have been used as common gaming houses, -d persons appeared before Mr P. S. Densem d.P. and Mr A. B. Morton J.P., in the Police Court over the week-end on gaming charges, and were remanded to appear in the Magistrate's Court on April 11. The accused were:

Frederick Eustace Hawken. a fisherman. Norman Fitch, a merchant. Lillian May Hogan, a widow. Victor Smith, a farmer, and Leonard Havelock Sharplin, a carpenter, who were charged with using piemises as common gaming houses.

Galvin Moore Davey, a clerk. Even Susannah Fitch, a married

woman. Frank Keno a labourer, and Peri Smith, who were chrged with

assisting, in the management of

common gaming houses. ■ Tare ha McLeod, a farm labourer, Tommy Paraone alias Tommy Brown, a bush man, Joseph Charles Faulkner, a truck driver, Dick Sidney Kohn, a labourer, Johanna Brown, a married woman, Charlie Pihama, a labouiei, Robert Douglas Little, a carpenter, Edward Heke. a labourer, Thomas Tangitu, a farmer, George Wise, retired, Leo McLeod, a labourer, Robert Ross Tait. retired, George Hayden Smith, hotel porter, and Cyril Keene Griffiths, a labourer, who were charged with being found without lawful excuse on premises used as common gaming houses.

In the case of those charged with conducting common gaming houses bail was allowed in the sum of £ 100 with one surety of £IOO. Those charged with assisting in the management were allowed out on hail in the sum of £SO and one surety of £SO and bail in the other cases was fixed at £5 and £ 5.

There were five raiding parties led by Sergeant W. H. Simister and assisted by Detective J. Hayes with three members of the Police Force stationed at Hamilton and constables from the Taurauga, Katikatl and Te Puke districts.
