SOLOMONS BATTLE
“Sparring For Position, 5 ’ Says Spokesman
Japanese Claims Again
Denied
London, Feb. 4
More Japanese claims are being made concerning air and naval losses inflicted by them in the Solo-
mons
However, an American naval spokesman reiterated that the Japanese claims were untrue, that the fighting was only in the nature of skirmishes and that a full announcement would be made at a later date.
The main Japanese base in the South-west Pacific at Rabaul has been attacked by Allied bombers for the sixth night running. A United States Navy spokesman said he would not call the action in the Solomons a pitched battle. It was like an open football match, all spread out and sparring for positions. “We have some information regarding losses which I think accurate, but our policy is that until we can make a simultaneous release of the losses by both sides we must hold off.” He added that there was no indication that Japanese aircraft carriers were involved. Enemy planes were from land bases in the Solomons
area
