GIRL ATTACKED BY JAPANESE SOLDIERS
Incident in Peking
FOREIGNERS INDIGNANT.
Peking, Sept. 5
Foreigners in Peking are highly indignant over an attack by Japanese soldiers upon Miss Arguello, private secretary to the American Minister.
Miss Arguello was riding round the glacis surrounding the legation quarter , when the Japanese, having decided without warning not to allow their section to be used for horseback riding, stopped her and handed her an unsigned note forbidding her to trespass.
The young woman continued her ride. When she returned she was surrounded by the Japanese soldiers with fixed bayonets. One threw a large stone at her pony and others struck her on the arm, snatched her riding cane and seized the bridle of the pony in an attempt to unseat her. Miss Arguello was saved from further violence only by the intervention of the French commandant.
