There was very keen competition from Bradford, Japan and the Continental sections. The market continued very firm at last week’s closing rates. Greasy Merino sold to 22d.
The average price of the wool sold at last week’s sales was £l6 19s 6d a bale, or 12.7 d a lb. London. Sept. 3
The London representative of the Australian Woolgrowers’ Council, Mr W. P. Devereux, reports:—The strong opening at the Sydney wool sales has strengthened the European markets. Quotations at all centres have advanced to a corresponding level, and indications of a maintenance of values are favourable. Some business has been done in Merino tops, but rather more business in fine medium crossbreds. Increased business has been done in crossbred yarns, with prices moving against buyers. The demand for uniform cloths has stimulated internal trade, but export is slow. While trade in France and Belgium is quiet generally the Continental futures markets have advanced 5 to 10 per cent., but transactions are not heavy.
