CARTAGE OF TIMBER

ROYALTY CHARGE BY COUNTY COUNCIL. The question of cartage royalty on timber claimed attention at Friday’s meeting of the Tauranga County Council. Messrs Rroad and Cameron, of Te Puke, wrote protesting against paying sixpence a hundred feet tax on timber when other sawmills are cart-

ing timber over the county roads free. They stated that within the last three months there has been a considerable quantity of timber carted to the Te Puke district frotai Rotorua mills by way of back loading for lorries that are engaged in transporting goods, etc., from Tauranga to Rotorua. The writers added: “We think it only fair that all those engaged in carting timber over the roads should be responsible for the same amount as we are paying to your Council.’’ The county clerk, Mr Lewis, had communicated with Messrs, Broad and Cameron, asking for further information. Or Morton said that certain sawmillers were carting timber without ; paying royalty to the Council. He gave an instance of damage done by such cartage on Bell’s Road. Cr Mends contended that all the sawmillers should be treated similarly. Timber was being carted from Rotorua, and was in competition with the local sawmillers, xvho had to pay the cartage royalty. In reply to a question Mr Beuham ; said the Oropi sawmill was paying the charge. Cr MacDougall thought it was a question of limit of loads. He moved—That the royalty of sixpence per 100 ft. be charged on all timber carted over the county by-roads. ; The motion was seconded by Cr , Morton and carried unanimously.
