The Commissioner stated he would be pleased to receive the Council’s decision. The Council deferred the matter in order that investigations mignt be made.
The question was again before the Council ut its meeting tins month.
Mr VV. A. Bennett, Papamoa, wrote stating he understands that the Stock Department are asking for the consent of the . County Council to the sale of a stock paddock at Wairoa. If this is done it will be a great injustice to the stockowners of the district. The paddock in question is the ' only public one between Ivatikati and Tauranga, and in time to come will be a great convenience to drovers of stock. The settlers, who are now mostly engaged' in milking, find it very inconvenient to furnish night paddocks for outside cattle. He trusted that the Council will, therefore, object to the sale of the aforesaid paddock, Th© County Clerk had replied to the Commissioner of Crown Lands as follows: ‘‘The above matter has been carefully gone into by the committee authorised by the Council to deal with same. After your enquiry it has been ascertained that the reserve is tlie only available stock holding place in the locality and occasions may continually arise when such a place is most essential for the purpose. Stock is at various times landed at and being brought to the stations in the locality and as driving at night is illegal j the reserve is needed. Under the circumstances the Council would prefer that the reserve be not included in any private holding. Mr Jensen has stated that he does not desire the area for inclusion with his property.”
