Mastertcn, May 21 At a meeting of the Borough Council last night, the Mayor stated that soon after the* 1921-23 council took office a loan of £7500 was placed to the credit of the gasworks extension account fon the purchase of a gasholder from England. The holder could not be shipped at the time and to save interest on the overdraft of £9OOO the' amount was transferred to that account till the holder was a vailable. It won Id he necessary toi obtain an Order-in-Council sanctioning this action. This course was adopted at once, the Council considering that the matter could be put in order 1 wbeu the annual balance sheet is submitted. Now l he (the Mayer) had been informed that twejve writs had been isseud out of Shpreme Court claiming a penalty of £IOO from each, of He councillors sitting at the time. If this persecution were* allowed to exist it would be a difficult job tb get men into public life Several councillors favoured resigning in a body. Eight members of the Conned held liable are in the present council.
