He said : “We must speedily settle* the foreign situation. I have not the slightest intention of sacrificin'-’ - a single legitimate claim. If called to term a Government I will not foiget our relations with Britain and there must be tire most cordial consideration. The match monopoly should be maintained. The question of twenty per cent additional taxation would depend on the foreign policy which must be friendly and sympathetic.’’

RADICAL SOCIALIST’S IX FRANCE Tire Times. Rec. May 21, 9.15 a.m. London, May 20. The Times Paris correspondent says M. Herriot, Leader of the Radical Socialists, declared he would decline any invitation to form a new Government unless he had complete freedom of action. He obviously was hinting at the possible demand which may be made on him the Socialists, whose support he must secure. ’Herriot further said any Government of which he was the head would concentrate on the foreign policy: He stated: “The reduction of military financial expenditure could not be contemplated till France had been put at her ease. France was justified in entrenching herself behind the damage she had suffered, but, at the same time, I confidently believe France is capable of reconciling the recovery of her claims with the restoration of Europe and the peace of the world.” Herriot added that an effort must be made to understand the real views and feelings of other people.
