PREFERENCE PROMISES
Aust.—N.Z. Cable Assoc. London, Dec. 20. The Daily Herald, replying to the suggestion that the new Parliament should honour Mr Baldwin’s preference promises, argues that many plans have been put forward at past Imperial Conferences which got no further. Resolutions of the Imperial Conference have no binding force; they are merely plans which the Prime Ministers) agree to submit to their Parliaments. The Herald adds that it is certain that if the British Parliament is asked to put new duties on apples, tinned salmon, etc., it will decline to do so by a large majority, and very properly, seeing that the nation has Just pronounced against Protection.
The Herald is also confident that neither Labour ncr Liberals are likely to try to get the Singapore! scheme through Parliament.
