The team was then chosen, with Cupples included as one of the forwards, but the Union took exception to the inclusion of Cupples. Mr Phelan then resigned from the selection committee, and the Rugby Union appointed Mr H. Cuff, of T e Puke, to fill the vacancy. The selection committee met again and selected the team as indicated above, Cupples being excluded.
