PAEROA-POKENO RAILWAY

HAURAKI FARMERS WANT LINE.

On several occasions during the present year various sections of the fanning community in this district have voiced a desire for the early construction of the proposed I’aerfraijfway. Speaking at a meeting of the Paeroa Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday night, Mr, E. Davis moved that the Government bo urged to construct immediately a stretch of the line, about two miles in length, which would give direct communication between the Pa-roa railway junction and the Waihou River, thence the trade would be practically direct to Auckland. ' This was carried unanimously. Mr. I). Mnnro, a prominent farmer of Netherton, said that practically to a man the settlers on the Haurald Plains wanted the line throng! 1 as early as possible. A sixmile length from Paeroa out to the plains had been authorised in 1915, but tli j residents were experiencing that “hope deferred which raaketh the heart, sick.” The various branches of the New Zealand Farmers' Union in the district were taking the matter up, and strong representations on the subject would probably emanate from a meeting of delegat ?s to be held at Turua in the near future.
