ESSENCE OF PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Thursday. The Settled Land Act; Amendment Bill and a bill to provide for Bible-reading in schools were read a first time. Leave was granted to Sir F. Whitaker to introduce the French Criminal Influx Bill. Colonel Brett moved a motion that the evidence of the Public Petitions Committee regarding the reoeption of Cardinal Moran be printed, but withdrew it, and a motion by the Hon. Mr Scotland to refer the matter back to the committee was rejected. Friday. The Hon. Mr Reynolds intimated that he had received a letter from Mr Hodge, Port Chaljuers, which stated that the Kermadec Islands would carry ten sheep to the acre, and would grow potatoes all the year round, and grow bananas and an indigenous sugar. The islands were well watered, stocked with goats, and the anchorage good. The group was of volcanic origin, but the writer did not apprehend any eruption was likely to take place. The Hon. Mr Bathgate gave notice of motion re a State Bank of Issue.
