WEST TAIERI. A petition from Weat Taieri was presented by a deputation. The petition, which was signed by heads of families, stated that it was necessary that the present achoolhouse should be removed from its site to one nearer the centre of the district— say to the Government, township of Maungatua, sometimes called Woodside. The deputation pointed but that the new site would be in th 9 centre of the population, whereas at present there were two schools close together, and none affording accommodation to the large number of settlers in the direction of Woodside. Mr Fulton spoke in favour of the request. I Mr Green considered that this application | should be referred to the Finance Committee*: which had a number of similar requests to deal with. He thought that the Board's Inspector should; in reporting on school matters, report confidentially to the Board, which should hand it to the requisite Committee. By this means the Board would be likely to get fuller reports. The application was referred to the Finance Committee. . 4 That the scale of staff submitted by the inapeetoM'be approved and adopted. 5 That no'school shall be established e>t maintained by the Board where lhe number of pupils is below twenty-five, and that it be left' to the discretion of the Board to subsidise schools in districts where the prescribed number of pupils cannot be obtained. 6 That the payment of teachers during t he present quarter be continued at the average rate of last year, and that the same allowance be made to committees as was paid last quarter. As a restilt of his visit to the district, the Inspector reeommen<iecl -that ten acres of section 24, block IX., be granted for a school site, and that a school be established there.. The Chairman moved, and it was agreed to recommend to the Government that the whole section be set apart— ten acres for the school and the remainder as part of the endowment for educational purposes. OBOOKSTON FLAT: The recommendation of the Inspector for the establishment of a school at Cookston Flat, was agreed to. , HEW SCHOOLS. The Chairman in reference to numerous applications for new 'schools, having pointed out the* state of the broad finances, the Finance Committee were ordered to report on the matter SCIENTIFIC APPABATUS. An application from the Athenaeum to purchase the scientific apparatus belonging to that institution, was referred to the Finance Committee. Mr Bastings objecting that the Board should thus relegate its work to a committee. PAPAKAIO. An addition to the schoolmaster's residence at this place (costing #23 10s) having been put up, application for payment of this sum was how made to the Board. As it wa* found ihat the Board had never authorised the expenditure, the application was refused. BLUE SPUR. Mr Taylor reported that on visiting the school unexpectedly at this place, he could net find any register of attendance. The schoolmaster Mr Dalzel stated to him that he bad a note of the attendance at his house, but it was not forthcoming, i It was decided to communicate with Mr Dalzel and the School Board on the matter.
