"Sherlock Holmes."

Those who visited the Town Hall last evening and witnessed the production of " Sherlock Holmes," by Mr J. C. Williamson's Company, ©J_p©fiftJ_<Sfed 6. rare treat, the combination, without doubt, being the cleverest that has visited this town, The character of the groat detective was taken by Mr Cuyler Hastings, who gave a very skilful performance, which met with the hearty appreciation of the audience, and he was frequently applauded for ]\ia clever acting. Other leading characters were pourtrayed by Misses Mabel Lane and May Chevalier, and Messrs F. Lumsden Hare, H. Hamilton Stewart and J. B. Atholwood, all of whom ably supported Mr Hastings. Mr Atholwood as " Professor Moriarty " was particularly successful, and he is unquestionably one of the finest character actors that has been seen on the New Zealand stage. Master Redge Carey also deserves a word of praise for the capable manner in which he filled the part of " Billy." The play was admirably staged, while the music supplied by the ochestra was exceptionally good. Nothing to equal last night's performance has been witnessed in this town previously, and it is therefore to be regretted that Mr Williamson's company was not more liberally patronised, especially as many inferior companies have drawn far larger houses.
