BRITAIN'S MOTOR TRADE
liOW EXPORTS JjAST YEAR
The terrific impact of the war effort of Britain's automobile industry on its export trade is shown by statistics relating to the shipment of automobiles to overseas markets during 1944. Only 23 new cars, valued at £7701, 1182 commercial vehicles (£547,734), and 197 commercial vehicle chasses (£48,758), in all only 1412 units, valued at £604,193, were exported last year.
A. comparison of these figures with the statistics of shipments in 1938, the year preceding the outbreak of hostilities, reveals the extent to which Britain's export of motor vehicles suffered during the war years, and, incidentally, the huge export potential that awaits the British motor industry in the early post-war years.
Following are the export figures of 1938:—Cars, 44,130 (valued at £5,486,898); car chasses, 24,137 (£1,786,897); commercial vehicles, 3384 (£1,639,868); and commercial vehicle chasses, 10,890 (£2,243,919)— a total of 82,541 units valued at £11,157,582.
