IN A TUNNEL

, HEAVY TRAIN STOPS PASSENGERS' DISCOMFORT O.C. TE KUITI, this day. An uncomfortable time was experienced by the hundreds of passengers on an over-crowded Auckland-Tanea-tua express when the train stopped in the middle of the Waihi tunnel for about twenty minutes, the engine being apparently unable to pull the heavy load up the grade, and causing the boiler to burst. The fireman received extensive burns, also asphixiation from the fumes, necessitating his removal to hospital. The train was finally backed to Karangahake, the previous station, three carriages removed and another engine secured to enable it to proceed on its journey. It arrived at Tauranga at 7 p.m., two hours late. Much alarm was felt amongst passengers during, the delay in the tunnel, the cause being then unknown, and many realised the possibility of asphixiation should the delay in the tunnel continue long, especially in view of the fact that many windows would not close, causing much coughing and choking.
