HOSPITAL RATING
DIFFICULTIES IN THE NORTH
POSSIBILITY OF INQUIRY
(0.C.) WHANGAREI, this day. A statement that the difficult position of hospital rating in the north was appreciated, and attention was being given to the possibility of an early inquiry into the administrative situation in the four northern-most counties, was made by the Minister of Health. Mr. Nordmeyer, in a letter replving to Mr. S. W. Smith. M.P.. which was read at yesterday's meeting of the Bay of Islands Hospital Board.
Mr. Smith said he had written to Mr. Nordmeyer and the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, outlining the resolution passed at a recent conference of Far hospital rate contributors, who asked for stabilisation at the 1939 level. At many meetings held throughout Northland, the injustice being done to the pakeha who carried the burden of ever-rising rates to provide hospital amenities for the largest Maori population of the Dominion was stressed. Rates in some areas had increased by 100 per cent in the last four years.
