JAPANESE CONVOY

Fifteen Ships Sunk In South-West Pacific

N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 2.30 p.m. SYDNEY, this day. The Japanese convoy which was trying to reinforce enemy bases in the Bismarck Archipelago has been wiped out. General Mac Arthur's communique to-day announces that nine more ships were destroyed by Allied aircraft, which attacked at mast height. Successive attacks sank a 7500-ton tanker, five cargo ships of 2000 tons each, a 500-ton freighter and two escorting corvettes. Enemy personnel casualties were heavy. With yesterday's losses a total of 12 merchantmen, aggregating 36,500 tons, and three small escorting warships have been destroyed.
