FIGHT OVER CONVOY
TWO JUNKERS DESTROYED Rec. 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 18. Aircraft escorting a North Atlantic convoy yesterday destroyed two German glider bomb-carrying Junkers attempting to attack the convoy. A combined Admiralty - Air Ministry communique states: "Two Grumman Wildcat aircraft operating from an escort carrier, H.M.S. Biter, commanded by Captain Boswell, yesterday intercepted a Junkers equipped with a glider bomb which attempted to attack the convoy. The enemy took evasive action and was entering a cloud when the Wildcats attacked. Their fire shot away one of the Junkers' starboard engines and the enemy crashed in flames. Both Wildcats landed safely on their carrier. „ , _ "Later in the day a Coastal Command Beaufighter, escorting the convoy, sighted another Junkers. The Beaufighter attacked from astern and scored a number of hits until the enemy machine dived vertically into the sea. The Beaufighter completed its escort duties and returned safely."
