HAPLESS BERLINERS
HUDDLED IN RUINED STREETS Rec. 9.30 a.m. LONDON, Feb. 18. Thousands of shivering, homeless people of Berlin are huddling around bonfires made from splintered timber from their homes which the police lit along the ruined streets, says the Stockholm correspondent of the Daily Mail. A new cold wave after the raid during the night of February 15 has gripped the city. At least 85 bodies so far have been dug out of the ruins of the Hotel Bristol. Bombs hit Berlin's biggest traffic centre, Gleisdreieck Station, where the underground railways, also the lines from Anhalter, Potsdamer and Lehrter stations meet. The authorities are stopping express trains 60 miles from Berlin because of the damage. Passengers are obliged to make their own way to the city. Commenting on the latest R.A.F. raid on Berlin, Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung states that Berliners had not previously suffered so heavily or faced such a hard test of nerves. It is officially announced that all Berliners aged over 18 will receive half a bottle of schnapps, 50 grammes of coffee, ten cigarettes, 125 grammes of sweets and one tin of sardines in recognition of their endurance.
