NOT WOMEN'S WORK
APPEAL FOR TELEPHONIST A male night telephonist at the Auckland Hospital, who could not, under the award, be replaced by a woman, was appealed for by the Hospital Board at this morning's sitting of the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board. Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., presided. On behalf of the board, which opposed the entry into the Army of Allan Richard Mentor, Mr. R. J. Cooper said 10 men were needed for this work at present, and the new Green Lane Hospital would require more. The award prohibited the use of women for answering the telephone and contacting hospital personnel after 9 p.m. Members of the board said it was a pity that a Grade 1 man had to be retained for such work. Mr. F. J. Cox, Crown representative, pointed out that when the case had been adjourned sine die by the Whangarei Armed Forces Appeal Board, at the time of the Japanese scare, appellant may have been considered more valuable in his work. The appeal was adjourned until May, when it would again be reviewed, on condition that the Hospital Board in the meantime trained someone to replace appellant.
