WOMAN AT ELLERSLIE FINE FOR SECOXD OFFENCE Charges of being found unlawfully on- Ellerslie racecourse on January .3 and laying totali.sator odds on the same day were admitted by Eva Loftus. a married woman, for whom Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared, in the Police Court this morning.

Detective-Sergeant Trethewey said that, as the result of a complaint received that Mrs. Loftus was taking bets in the women's convenience in the Derby stand at Ellerslie, two constables from the women's division went to the convenience, and defendant desisted. However, later she was interviewed, when she admitted taking bets and laying totalisatdr odds, with a limit of £10 for a win and £3 for a placed horse. She said she took 30/ in half-crowns en two races. In January of last year she had been fined £2 for a similar breach of the Gaming Act. A plea for the imposition of a small fine was made by Mr. Sullivan, who said Mrs. Loftus suffered from a broken leg, while her husband had been on compensation for 18 months as the result of an accident while at work. She was ignorant of the fact that because of her earlier conviction she was not allowed on the racecourse. On the first charge defendant was convicted and ordered to pay costs, and on the other a fine of £5 was imposed.
