UNUSUAL APPEAL
HOSPITAL WORK TRAINING OF NURSES Stating that they wished to gain knowledge of mental nursing two nurses employed by the Auckland Hospital Board appealed, at a sitting of the Auckland Industrial ManOfficer to allow them to. leave he Seraf/ndmatYmity nursing cerifl; hospitals nurses had been speS? leave tor training purposes. S Mr. Mackay, had no desire to cave the hospital other than to train •.s nurses and it would be a pity, to deprive them of the mental training which was likely to play so important a part in the hie of the community rcpresenting the manpower officer, said the manpower officer was in a rhfnciilt p * 'ion in regard to Hospital Board cases Nobody in the manpower office claimed to understand what wont on in a big institution such as "he hospital, and when application was made to terminate employment the authorities had to act on the advice of the secretary. 'I here had been cases where the manpower ofiice was not behind decisions, although given automatically in favour of the hospital. The manpower officer welcomed any opportunity to give assistance to the Mental Hospital. It felt sympathetically towards the appellants However, he had no other alternative to refusing termination of their present employment. Miss V M. Cussen, lady superintendent at the Auckland Hospital said that, a number of nurses had been released for training, and had not returned after receiving it. The appellants did not want to be mental hospital nurses but wanted to collect a certificate. . ' The chairman, Mr. J. 0. Liddell: The point is that the certificate would help them in the future. Witness agreed and suggested that in six months' time the appellants would be able to leave. The committee reserved its decision.
