WORKERS' BUSES
NORTH SHORE SERVICE
PETITION TO PARLIAMENT
(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day.
The Public Petitions Committee reported to the House of Representatives yesterday on the petition of Trevor Hill and 205 ratepayers and residents of Victoria Park, North Devonport, praying for the restoration of a bus service that formerly served residents on the following routes: Ngataringa Road, Wesley Street, Hinemoa Avenue, Regent and Princess Streets. The committee reported that the petition be referred to the Government for most favourable consideration.
In presenting the report, the chairman of the committee, Mr. Schramm (Government — Auckland East), explained that it related to a bus service which had been eliminated. The district served was essentially a workers' district, and the* residents had to trudge a long distance to get the nearest bus to take them to work. This was the only bus service in the district which had not been restored, and he could not understand this when one could see special buses running to cabarets. It was time the bus which served essential workers was restored. If there was to be any curtailment it should be at the expense of those seeking pleasure.
The report was adopted.
