ELEVEN BOYS INVOLVED STOKES TAKEN FROM TRAINS (0.C.) GISBORNE, this day. Arising out of a series of, thefts of military equipment from trains stopping at Wairoa eleven boys whose ages ranged from 12 to u appeared in the Wairoa Children s Court charged with 40 offences, including breaking, entering and theft,'and possessing skeleton keys. Mr. J. Miller, S.M., expressed concern at the appearance in Court of so many young lads, remarking that Wairoa was the worst part of his district so far as juvenile crime was concerned. . . One lad was sent to a Borstal institute for 18 months, one was committed to the care of the superintendent of child welfare, and the other nine cases were adjourned fo; a month to enable the welfare officer to make a report on the possibilities of forming marae committees to take charge of youths and to introduce disciplinary measures.
