OBITUARY

MRS. MARY ELLEN WHITNEY The death occurred at her residence early this morning of Mrs. Mary Ellen Whitney, wife of Mr. C. A. Whitney, of Victoria Avenue, Remuera. Mrs. Whitney, who was 73 years of age, had been ill for many years. A daughter of the late Mr. J. L. Wilson, of Lower Remuera, as it was styled in those days, she was born in Auckland in 1868. A well-known philanthropic worker in Auckland, Mrs. Whitney gave widely to all charities. Her gifts included a property at Campbell's Bay which she presented to the Rev. Jasper Calder for the Auckland City Mission in July, 1933. It is called "Whitney Dale" and has been used as a convalescent home. At present it is being used particularly by soldiers' wives who have been ill. Mrs. Whitney is survived by her husband and a family of three. The sons are Mr. J. C. Whitney and Mr. Chisholm Whitney, of Victoria Avenue. The daughter is Mrs. W. W. Dove,, also -of Victoria Avenue.
