BUTCHERS' SHOPS

PROTEST AT CLOSING

HOUSEWIVES' DIFFICULTY

A protest against the closing of butchers' shops on the Saturdays following Christmas and New Year was made by the National Council of Women, Auckland branch, last night. The president, Miss L. V. Langsford, presided.

A remit was passed suggesting that butchers' shops should open on these days, as it would greatly inconvenience housewives if they were closed for the four consecutive days on each occasion.

The loss of the holiday for some employees if the shops reopened each Saturday was referred to at the meeting but others considered that a privilege should not be gained by one small section of the people at the expense of the rest of the community. People with families to provide for should be considered, and the extra work that would be thrown on the housewife should be taken into account. The reinstatement of the ladies' car on the Main Trunk railway was urged at the meeting and it was decided to ask the Minister of Railways to arrange this. The car had been taken off owing to lack of patronage, but now that petrol was rationed it was felt that more women would be travelling by train. It was specially recommended that the car should be reinstated at the beginning and before the end of the school holidays. The council endorsed the recommendations contained in the milk report brought out by the New Zealand Women's Food Value League with the exception that delivery should be finished by 7 a.m.. Another remit, which was passed, suggests that the appropriate Government Department be asked to arrange with retailers to put on sale a wholemeal loaf of the same weight and at the same price as the standard white loaf.
