FIVE REPORTED

DIPHTHERIA CASES

OTAHUHU SCHOOL PUPILS Five cases of diphtheria among pupils attending the Otahuhu Primary School have been reported to the Health Department during the last 10 days. Swabbing has been carried out under the direction of the health authorities and seven carriers are now in isolation.

"There is a certain amount of diphtheria throughout the Auckland health district just now," said the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. T. J. Hughes, to-day. It was stated by Dr. Hughes that there were more cases of the disease at present than during any other month of the year, and to date there was an increased number of cases compared with previous years. Cases notified were swabbed immediately. Dr. Hughes said that it had not been deemed necessary to close the school.
