OUTPUT OF COAL

STATEMENT BY MINISTER The Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, stated yesterday that the output of coal at the Dobson mine was normal. He said that when he addressed the men last week he urged them to give the greatest production possible. Dealing with the coal position in general, Mr. Webb said that production was increasing greatly at the Blackball Mine, which had been taken over by the Government, and he was confident of the future. The contract system enabled the men to earn good wages. He said that in 1935, when the Government came into office, the output was 2,115,184 tons, and production last year was 400,915 tons higher. Mr. Webb added that there was no wastage at present, and there was evidence that the productive capacity of existing collieries was adequate to meet the increased consumption caused by the war, and industrial development.
