COST OF LIVING FALLS.

'——— t LONDON, August 17. | < The cost of living index figure showed * a slight fall on August 1, when the index figure was 85 poitute above the level for. ] July, 1914, and- compared with 87 points , at July \. The fall of- two point* is equivalent to about 1 per cent. For food l alone the index figure on August 1 wae I 01 points above July, 1914, showing a fall of four points, or about 2% per cent , since July 1, when .the figure wae 68 j points above. July, 1914. \ The decline in index figures is due to a * shanp fall in prices of new potatoes, which were exceptionally high at the beginning „ of July. Among other items covered by the index figures, eggs increased in price * during July and prices for tobacco and f cigarettes were raised as a result of addi- C tional duties provided for in the Budget.
