MAORI MIGRATION.

ADDRESS AT MUSEUM.

The migration of the Maori race from the island of Ra.iatea, the Hawaiki of the Maoris, and their gradual development of a new life and culture, wae described by the director of the Auckland WarMemorial Museum, Mr. Gilbert Archey, in an address yesterday afternoon at the museum. It wae the first of a series of lectures, which will be given by members of the museum staff each Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Arc'hey described how rhe old etyle of double canoes, linked together, were superseded by building large single canoes, and traced the history of the large canoe in the museum, from the time of its building on the eaet coast until the present day. He described the development of a new art of carving, made possible by better greenstone chisels available and the presence of malleable woMs, totara being chiefly used.
