AWARDS NOTIFIED.

ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY.

HEROISM IN NEW ZEALAND,

CHRISTCHURCH, Friday

Tlie court of directors, of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand has recognised deeds of bravery by granting the following awards:—

Silver Modal.—Mr. Albert Fishburn, aged 27, of 233, Esplanade, Petone. Displaying excellent seamanship and real courage, Mr. Fishburn, in a launch, succeeded in rescuing a man whose dinghy had capsizcd in a heavy sea.

Bronze Modal.—Mr. Richard Steele Aubin, aged 34, of Kawhia, and Martin Alfred Clark 4 aged 3-i, of Kawhia. Messrs. Aubin and Clark went out in a 14ft dinghy with one pair of oars and an old faulty motor to tlie rescue of a launch containing Constable U. F. McKenzie and his two sons.

Bronze Modal.—David S. McLenaghan, ageil 13, of 14, Somerfield Street, Christchurch. Two bovs, Desmond H. B Spurr and Peter R. I. Mason, aged 10 and five respectively, were drowned at Okain s Bay. A third boy, Brian Spurr, aged seven, was rescued from a hole bv McLenaghan. He then tried to save Des"mond Spurr, making two attempts without success.

Certificate.—Mr. Glen McDonald, aged 2.'i of West Vancouver. Mr. McDonald, a seaman 011 the British motor-ship Scottish Prince, rescued a waterside worker from drowning.

Certificate.—Allen Arthur Woolston. aged 12, of Te \Yhakarae, Taumarunni. Woolston rescued his brother, Richard John Woolston, aged nine, from drowning in the Wangunui River. He then entered the water again at the rapids, whore he caught and struggled with Mr. F. J. V. Coombes, aped 21; who was drowning. He managed to bring the man to shallow water and applied artificial respiration before going for help but it was of no avail.

Letter of Appreciation.—.Toy Russell, aged 11, of Alexandra. Tragedy was narrowly averted in the public school bat as at Alexandra when a small boy got out of his depth. Joy Russell reached the bank with him, lidding him by a strap of his bathing suit.

Letter of Appreciation.—Mrs. Barbara Watson, aged 28, of Paraekoretu Street, Ilunterville. Mrs. B. Watson saved Coral Lyons, aged seven, from drowning in the ilunterville swimming baths.
