ARMY RECRUITS.
X-RAY EXAMINATIONS.
OVER 100 EACH NIGHT.
Beemits for the Third Echelon of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force underwent X-ray examination at the Auckland Hospital last evening, and tie 120 were examined at the rate of about one a minute. There are nearly 700 city men to be examined, and it is expected to complete the work by May 3.
The examinations are being conducted under the direction of Dr. C. D. Costello, radiologist at the hospital. In the X-ray room two technicians were on duty, one placing the man in correct position and the other handling the controls. The film is exposed for one-tenth of a second and a poster- anterior record of the cheet was photographed. To carry out the work last night nearly 150 feet of film wa3 used. The next procedure was to dispatch the film to the dark room for developing and fixing processes.
Dr. Costello will classify the films and afl abnormal ones will be examined by a chest specialist, Dr. C. McDowell. Where trouble is of a serious nature the recruit will appear later before a special army medical board.
The chairman of the Hospital Board, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said that to examine so maaiy men in a short time was a big undertaking, but in any war measure the board was willing to give any assistance that was possible. Dr. C'ostello, he said, had shown a fine spirit when he offered to do the work in his own time.
Commenting on this, Dr. Costello acknowledged the willing manner in which the technical staff had agreed to work long hours in order to carry out the work.
