DOMINION'S CLAIMS.
TOURISTS FROM EAST.
PASSENGERS IN DUTCH SHIP.
The increasing popularity of New Zealand as a holiday resort foi people resident in the East was borne out to-day, when the Dutch liner Roggeveen, from Saigon, berthed. The majority of her 38 passengers are visitors from Malaya and the Dutch East Indies, who intend to spend their vacations in New Zealand and Australia.
According to Mr. W. Gilliam, Controller of the Post and Telegraph Department, Malaya, who intends to spend two months' furlough in the Dominion, there will be an increasing number of Malaya residents coining to New Zealand. England and Europe were nowcut off for most people, and New Zealand and Australia were the obvious choice of those wishing to travel. Mr. Gilliam is accompanied by his wife and son and a Chinese amah.
Two police officials were included among the passengers. They were Mr. C. Tidy, assistant superintendent of police at Kelanta, Malaya, and Mr. R. G. B. Law.ion, Commissioner of Police for Rangoon City and for the last six months Deputy Inspector-General of Police for North Burma. Mr. Tidy ik accompanied by his wife and they intend to spend six months in the Dominion, later visiting Sydney and returning to Malaya in July.
Mr. Lt wson spent his first holiday in New Zealand last year and has now returned to take up his residence at Kerifceri, where Mrs. Lawson has preceded him. He was accompanied by his daughter.
Two Dutch families, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. C. Penning and family, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Gilies, 'arrived ito spend a holiday in New Zealand.
Rev. Father E. Lyons, of Thames, returned from a holiday in Java.
