MILITARY PREPARED Incidents In Poland Aggravate Situation DUCE'S PEACE EFFORTS (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 28. The British United Press Berlin representative says that it is claimed that Germany's military preparations are completed and that all units are at their war stations. The Hungarian-Slovak frontier was closed last night, says a Budapest message. German troops are pouring into Bratislava and leaving for the frontier. The Polish Foreign. Office presented all foreign correspondents with gas masks, commenting, "You may need them." Three incidents are regarded as aggravating the situation: (!•) The arrest of two Polish Customs officers in Danzig. (2) The threatening position of the German cruiser Schleswig Holstein. (3) The reported mobilisation of East Prussia. In Warsaw the Press for the first time admits the possibility of war and describes the German attitude as Imperialism with the mask off. Newspapers declare that Britain will not agree to a new Munich and that Germany has lost the war of nerves. The Italian Press is pessimistic and forecasts an unfavourable British reply to Herr Hitler. It holds Britain responsible for war or peace. A semi-official news service in Rome reports active consultations between Signor Mussolini and Herr Hitler, II Duce making «very effort to lessen international tension and support the cause of peace.
