PLANS FOR NOTIUM.

TO BE SCHOOLED. HORSES FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, Wednesday. Judging by the response of owners, the committee of the Combined Hunts gathering to be held at the end of the month at New Plymouth has no reason to regret its enterprise in increasing stakes generally and preparing for an outstanding success. Not only numerically, but .the class listed is of a quality, seldom.-s4en at a hunt club fixture. Additional interest is, of course, given to the gathering by the running of the Duke of Gloucester Cup on the second day, which contains' material for a very fine contest. Entries are from a wide range and will serve as a good preliminary for the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting which follows soon afterwards.

Just on a score of Hftwera horses are to compete and interest is being taken in their track -efforts. VfraCteul, 1 who since racing at Trentham has been kept at steady I" 1 *-'® work during his trainer's absence at Riccarton, has kept his condition and is one of the most forward of the local division. Viracious galloped well this morning, running naif a mile .comfortably in 58s under heavy conditions and on the extreme outside of the course proper. This was bettered by his stable companion, Judgment, who recorded 57 3-ss, beating Amoroso. Judgment has done exceedingly well during his winter .spell and can safely he ticked off for a good effort the first time out.

Ramleh and Racecall finished up pace work by sprinting home smartly. ..Both are coming to hand satisfactorily.'

Raceaway looks ready to do L. George a winning turn, invariably shaping better than his galloping mate Val Pere. The latter looks likely to do better with harder track conditions.

Notium is in. good nick and, hopping away smartly at the five-furlong post from Winsome Liu maintained his advantage to record t'l.lo 4-5. After the New Plymouth meeting Xotium is to be schooled over hurdles and he looks quite a possibility as a jumper.

Gitann Lass, who so far has not shaped up to her £rack promise, sprinted three furlongs smartly down the back in 37 3-os.

The .junipers Car Leaf and . Student 'Prince accomplished a round of; useful pace work. Student Prince appears to be shaking off his soreness, and his next appearance over hurdles is awaited with i interest.

Le Marquis is in capital order end sprinted a couple of furlongs in 275.

Mr. B. La Pouple's Illumination—lsotta gelding in to rac-e as Chiltern, and the Resinous—Gold Morn gelding as Gold The?*' recent addition to H. Scally's team, Diamond Cutter, was associated with Golden Orchid and Captain Bligh in a gallop over three furlongs, the two finishing in the order named in 41%5.. Captain Bligh, who got the worst of the breakaway, finished on quite well in thia, I his first fast work, and he is sure to improve. Diamond Cutter looks ready to race, and Gojden Orchid is rapidly Ipproaching racing trim. ' Fiancee has thickened out remarkably and will probably be seen out at Wanganui. . A SATISFACTORY TRIAL. The Takanini gelding Milanion was responsible for a good workout over five furlongs nt Ellerslie oiiTuesday morning. He had Marie's Acre aa a companion .and was going nicely in front at the end of the gallop, though Marie's Acre was not unduly bustled. In eight starts last season Milanion failed to earn a winning bracket, but if be.tlins up to bis trial of last Tuesday in the Sylvia Park Handt cap next Saturday he'will keep the tfft of the field busy. RACED WELL LAST SPRING. Last season Philcourt revealed his best form in the spring, when h e was only once unplaced in seven starts. He beat a good field when he annexed the Avon-i dale Guineas, and at his next start ran! « close second to Hot Box in the Auckland Guineas. Gay Son wion the latter event, but was placed third through interference, though Philcourt appeared to suffer most. In the .Tellicoe Handicap on Saturday Philcourt is on the minimum,, ianjd therefore has every chance to make 4MMBdh . 1
