TIN QUOTA.
FIXED AT 40 PER CENT,
FOR JUNE QUARTER.
The International Tin Committee, at a meeting in London, fixed the quota for the second quarter of J939 at 40 per cent of standard tonnages.
The committee discussed the question of existing over-exports, and have made arrangements for their liquidation.
The "free" quota for the quarter now ending is 35 per cent, which is supplemented by 10 pep cent provision for the bufier pool.
During last year the quota was cut severely in order to curtail outputs. It was fixed at a lowered rate of 70 per cent for the first quarter, reduced to 55 per cent for the second quarter, and reduced again to 45 per cent for the remaining two quarters.
As an offset to these cuts in production the buffer pool was instiiuted for the purpose of lifting and stabilising bhe price of the metal. Last May the price fell to £ 153 a ton, but in recent months it has been maintained within the control's objective limits of £200 to £230 per ton, but the low allowable production has impeded the profit earning capacity of producers. Moreover, world stocks have accumulated. Teaching a few weeks ago the highest level for five years.
The next meeting of the committee will be held at The Hague on April 27.
