THREAT TO KAURIS.
BUSH FIRE DANGER. FORESTERS' FIERCE FIGHT. FLAMES HURDLE BREAKS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. To prevent fires started in the grass from reaching kauris in the Maungamuku river scenic reserve, fire-fighters worked until nightfall yesterday. The outbreak is at the head of the Omahuta Valley, and the fire is advancing on a two-mile front, endangering many thousands of acres of standing forest. Foresters were called from Puketi yesterday, when 15 were employed making fire-breaks. The wind dropped in the evening without, however, bringing the rain wanted for the past two months. During the night the fire jumped the breaks in some places, and this morning was burning fiercely on the edge of the kauris. Further firebreaks are being constructed at a rapid rate to-day.
