TRIBUTE BY MAYOR
FORMER CZECH CONSUL. Regret at having to take leave officially of Mr. R. M. Algie a« Consul for Czechoslovakia in- New Zealand — regret which he was sure the community shared —was expressed in a letter addressed yesterday by the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, to Mr. Algie. "If I may say so," states Sir Ernest's letter, "you have upheld your office with dignity and distinction, and one cannot escape the conclusion that the circumstances responsible for the closing of the cpnsulate here are repugnant to residents of a British democracy. "To me, as no doubt to other Aucklanders, it is extraordinary that the repercussions of European developments should be felt in this manner in faraway New Zealand. It forces one to ponder deeply on the causes, and to sympathise wholeheartedly with the | smaller nation victim* of ruthless aggression," the - letter concluded.
