FAREWELL CRUISE.
ACHILLES FOR SOUTH.
MINE-SWEEPING EXERCISES.
NAVAL RESERVISTS AT SEA.
On * brief farewell cruise of New Zealand, H.M.S. Achilles left Auckland this morning for Lyttelton, Dunedin and Wellington. The warship will return to Auckland in three weeks' time, and during October and November preparations will be made for the departure for England. The vessel will sail from Auckland early in December.
Twelve naval ratings of the Auckland Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve joined the Achilles for a short course of training at sea.
The two escort vessels, H.M.S. Leith and H.M.S. Wellington, sailed at two o'clock this afternoon, accompanied by the Waknkura, for a week's mine-sweep-ing exercises in the Hauraki Gulf. About 40 ratings of the Naval Volunteer Reserve were on board under the charge of two officers.
Before the departure of the vessels reservists from southern divisions arrived in Auckland to take part in the exercises.
The total of over 50 was the largest number of reservists ever sent to sea in New Zealand for training at the same time.
Only the training ship Philomel and H.M.S. Leaniler and the Admiralty survey vessel Endeavour were left in port at the naval base for the week-end.
