(By Telegraph—Press Aesoclatlon.)
WANGANUI, Friday,
Addressing an audienre at Fordell to-day, the Minister of Labour, theHon. H. T. Armstrong, repeated his assertion that there waa not an ablebodied man in the country to-day out of employment. In 1036, he said, the amount paid in wages in New Zealand was £00,209,000, and in 1938 it waa £91,053.000, an increase of over £24,000,000.
The income of people from sources other than wages and salaries increased in the same period by £23,905,000, the Minister stated. For every extra 8d collected in unemployment taxation, people, therefore, had an extra 19/4 to spend. The Government had been accused of drafting all unemployed into public works camps, but, of 79,200 unemployed, only 18,000 had gone on to public works.
In 1928, said the Minister, there were 10.227 registered apprentice*, and in 1935, when the Government took office, the number decreased to 3329. There were now close on 9000 and it would not be long befor© the 10,000 mark was reached.
