EAST COAST ROADS. TORRENTIAL. RAIN SEQUEL (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHAKATAXE. this day. As the result of torrential rain last night tlie Whakatane-Opotiki road was extensively damaged. Large slips came down about six miles from Whakatane. At Taneatua there was an extensive slip, and several minor ones occurred in the Waimana Gorge, holding up Opotiki traffic for several hours this morning. C,ishorne-Opotiki passengers in service oars were delayed for two hours and a half, with the result that they missed their connection with the Rotorua express. Road staffs were assembled on the sites of the slips at an early hour and cleared a track through the debris sufficient to enable traffic to be resumed by 10 a.m. Early this morning traffic in the direction of Tauranga and Rotorua experienced difficulty and delay owing to ft dense fog which enveloped the Rangitaiki Plains. The fog cleared shortly after d;ivbreak.
