ITALIAN DEFENCES. WORK ON FRENCH FRONTIER. (Received 1.30 p.m.) NICE, August 31. Two thousand Italians are reported to be fortifying the frontier opposite the French village at Isola, Alpes Maritimes. Earlier this week a cable was received stating that 800 French farmers had been ordered to hand over their land, which, owing to the boundary drawn up under the treaty of 1860, was on the Italian side of the border. The land was required for defence purposes and Italy has promised to compensate the settlers.
