One of the worse smashes ever seen at Randwick took place to-day during the running of the first division of the Novice Handicap. Five horses, including Bronze Tulip, fell; Sweet Brigade was killed and Glenman so seriously injured that he had to be destroyed. Three of the jockeys were cent to hospital, M. Papworth suffering internal injuries. He is in a serious condition.
Might Not made the early running in the Villier*? Stakes, but Valbeau took charge passing the half-mile, being attended by Might Not, Jocular and Lord Bine. Valbeau was still leading at the final furlong, but Ramdin beat him by a length and a quarter, with Sol Volatile another length away third. Silver Standard, having his first race since the Melbourne Cup meeting, finished last. The winner s time, 1.35V4, is equal to the A ustrail an and New Zealand record. Billy Boy had a decisive victory over Country Party in the Holiday Handicap. Coolspell won the High-weight Handicap from 13 others, including Mananui, Troy and Red Rosebud, who were unplaced. Capaneous and Silver Coat were unplaced in the Hurdle Race. The Squire, the Iliad colt Glaucus and the Iliad filly Litigation were unplaced in the December Nunsery Handicap. Among those unplaced in the first division of the Novice Handicap were Kow Tow, Lion Hunt, Bronze Tulip and Fantan. Results:— VILLIERS STAKES of £1000. One mile.
