STEEL CARGO SHIPS.
U.S. Merchantmen to be Armed Ready for War. TENDERS FOR 12 CALLED. (Received 11. 30 a.m.) WASHIXGTO.V, December Iβ. The United States Maritime Commission announced that it will call tenders for 12 steel cargo vessels for immediate construction. This is the largest peacetime order for merchant cargo tonnage ever placed in the United .States. The vessels will l>e armed and easily adaptable to wartime purposes.
