LIQUOR SUPPLIED.
KING COUNTRY WOMEN. BEER KEG IN WHARE. (By Telegraph—Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, this day.
In the Magistrate's Court this morning Edwin C. Grylls was charged with supplying liquor to female natives at Manunui on October 2. Mr. £. B. Taylor appeared for defendant, and entered a plea of guilty.
A fine of £40, with costs, was im posed.
Charles P. Roger was charged with supplying liquor to one female native on the same date,, and at the same place.
Defendant, in a statement, said he was asked by Grylla to lift a five-gallon. keg of beer from the Manunul railway station on October 2, which he did, and he took it to Gry Hβ'. whare, where he opened the keg and poured out four glasses of beer. He placed them on the mantelpiece, -but denied handing the beer to native women. . '
A female,witness said the beer was handed to her by Roper.
Constable Sullivan said he did not see Roper serve the beer, but saw him open the keg. When questioned, Roper denied wiving the Maori women. „,.:;%'
The constable gave Roper an excellent character.
The magistrate' said that although Roper's case was not as serious as Grylls' it was not so simplpe as Roper had tried to make out.
A fine of £10 and costs was imposed.
